Grants and Awards
Mick Karol has been very successful in achieving grant funding for development work in a number of projects. Grants relevant to the pressure monitoring device already received are:
UK: SMART £75,000.
A combination of micro and feasibility awards for product development. This allowed the initial research and design work for the pressure monitor to be performed.
EU: CRAFT €1,000,000 (approx £650,000).
Co-operative research award. This is for Product Development and Full Clinical Trailing and involves a consortium of companies working with Blueprint Innovation, who holds the ultimate commercialisation rights and patent over the pressure monitoring device.
The other companies are developing the pressure sensors, electronics components and software and Ulsys will purchase exclusively from them under the terms of the grant.
This project is specifically concerned with the development of a cure for venous leg ulcers through a combination of pressure monitoring and application of specific enzymes to the wound. The prototype device already available is suitable for use in the planned clinical trials and Ethics Committee applications have already been submitted.
The current funding request is to bring a market-ready product forward in a shorter timeframe.
